Stevie was the sort of person who would have interested Joseph Mitchell, a sidewalk character, a fixture of New York, before the sidewalks got too crowded to notice and the fixtures too important to be seen in public. Stevie was not important. He never did a single thing of note in his life except find a million ways to enjoy it. Today it is hard to imagine a person like Stevie, just as it is hard to believe that stores once had stamp departments and that there were customers with a reason to visit them. Stevie lived his life in reverse of the natural order: he retired at age 25 and went to work at age 70. And he never would have gone to work if his modest inheritance had not run out at the age he supposed his life would.
